Notice of Regulatory Change

Board for Barbers and Cosmetology Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation

February 10, 2020

The Board for Barbers and Cosmetology has adopted amendments to its Barbers and Cosmetology Regulations (18 VAC 41-20-270) and Esthetics Regulations (18 VAC 41-70-270) which take effect on February 10, 2020. These changes address the disinfectant requirement. The requirement to use a tuberculocidal disinfectant has been replaced with the requirement to use an “EPA registered disinfectant that is bactericidal, virucidal and fungicidal.” This change reflects national best practices for use of disinfectants. It also allows licensees more options for disinfectant solution during a time when several manufacturers are reducing or eliminating the production of “tuberculocidal” disinfectants. All regulants of the Board are responsible for reading and becoming familiar with the Board’s regulations.
